Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Talks About New Album

Sludgy prog thrashers Mastodon have been hard at work on their follow-up to 2009’s Crack the Skye according to guitarist Brent Hinds. The heavily-tattooed Hinds, who resembles what could only be described as a mountain man, talked about the new record and his two side projects during a recent chat with Spin Magazine.

“It’s very close,” he says of the upcoming record. “I have two guitar solos left to record, and one or two vocal parts and a couple of keyboards and that’s it.”

Hinds also spoke of how the new record is infusing the band, which is comprised of Hinds and Bill Kelliher on guitar, Troy Sanders on bass and Brann Dailor on drums, with an excitement they haven’t had in a while.

“This only took us a couple weeks to record and there’s a totally different feeling to it. It’s a jump-on-your-bed, get naked, and go streaking kind of record,” he said. “I haven’t had this feeling about a Mastodon record since Leviathan. It’s just fucking awesome.”

Hinds continued about the subject matter of the lyrics, which are sung by Hinds, Sanders and Dailor.

“We’ve got a song about fighting, there’s a song about lifting heavy stuff, there’s a song about people on meth creeping around in trees trying to get the best wood grain out of a tree to sell it at Lowe’s for money… The album is kind of silly. We’re taking the piss out of things.”

Still no word on when we can expect the album, which has working titles of either The Hunter or Brother in memory of Hinds’ recently-passed brother, but according to drummer Dailor, it will sound “a little more stripped down…like a really super-heavy Led Zeppelin or something.”

Now that’s something to look forward to.
