Review: RAT Tail Distortion Cable – A Product for a Different Mentality

By: Carlos Martin Schwab

What do you think about having an effect outside your pedalboard?

If your answer is yes, please read on…

Available in 3 different lengths (10, 18 and 25 foot), the RAT Tail Distortion Cable is basically a distortion pedal loaded into a guitar cable, using the same clipping circuitry used in the Vintage RAT Distortion.

At the end of the 90° cable is a 3-position knob, with true bypass, and 2 selectable distorted modes. The true bypass mode makes the cable work like a regular cable. Position one adds in the first gain stage, a unity gain distortion, like a medium crunchy overdrive, which is pretty cool for crunch rhythm. Switching to the second position, volume increases slightly, around 3db, for maximum distortion and heavy saturation.

Chords sound pretty cool overall in both modes. Using it in front of an already distorted amp gives a bit of edge, and minimizes low string issues.

Bass players might like this for a fuzz bass option. It does have the overall distortion character and flavour of the RAT pedal, but the lack of adjustability feels somewhat limiting. The batteries are a weak point: it uses small 397 watch batteries. So, if you’re planning to use it while on stage,  you’d better have spare batteries on hand.

Specifications:

  • Distortion effect circuitry built into the connector
  • Same clipping Diodes using in Vintage RAT Distortion pedals
  • 2 Ranges of distortion, selectable right on the connector
  • (Position 1 is True ByPass)
  • Batteries – Uses (2) “Siver-Oxide” Type 397

MSRP – $69.69 – $75.99
