Legendary guitar and piano/keyboard virtuoso, Tony MacAlpine’s new selftitled album, to be released June 21 on Favored Nations, marks a highly-anticipated return to solo work after a prolific decade of output with his bands, including prog-metal-fusion trio
Planet X; GRAMMY-nominated jazz fusion outfit CAB; power metallers Ring Of Fire; as well as performing keyboard and guitar duties in Steve Vai’s double platinum DVD-selling live band “The Breed” from 2001-2006. “When I set out to write a new album, I quickly realized that my urge to once again create and define myself as a solo artist had returned with a vengeance,” said MacAlpine. “This is my strongest album to date. I can’t wait to hit the road and play it live.”

Drawing inspiration from his own life and experiences, singer, guitarist and songwriter Chris Cornell wrote a chart topping hit with the Audioslave single “Be Yourself.” Released on the band’s 2005 sophmore album Out of Exile, the song would go on to top both the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts, helping to propel the band to the top of the post 2000 rock world. The song has not only become a fan favorite, it has also been used as the entrance music for WWE wrestler Ashley Massaro and New York Mets outfielder Shawn Green.

After being asked, “What’s the greatest three minutes of your life?” Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper answered, “There’s two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, when you’re just getting ready to open the presents. The greed factor is right there. The next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school when you’re sitting there and it’s like a slow fuse burning. I said, ‘If we can catch that three minutes in a song, it’s going to be so big.'” And he did, turning “School’s Out” into one of the biggest hits of the ‘70s, and later the ‘90s when it was featured in Richard Linklater’s coming of age classic film “Dazed and Confused.”

“Rock n Roll Train” was not only a huge hit single for the band ACDC, released on their 2008 album Black Ice, the song also became the first piece of music from a major artist to be leaked legally on the internet. A member of the sound crew took it upon himself to memorize the song’s main guitar riff, then later sang it on video, which he uploaded to YouTube. As well, the single was released on a 7-inch vinyl record, with the B side being the song “War Machine,” a throwback to the early days of rock, and ACDC’s career, when 7-inch records were released.

Though it was written by classical composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, “Flight of the Bumblebee” has since become a favorite vehicle for guitarists to prove their mettle as the fastest, baddest player around. The song was used in 2008 by virtuoso, Brazilian speed-picker Tiago Della Vega to set the Guinness record for the fastest guitarist alive. Vega performed the piece in a wide swath of tempos, starting with a relatively slow speed and working his way up to the mind-boggling 320 beats per minute, all while looking like he barely breaks a sweat. It may not be the most musical thing in the world, but from a purely technical standpoint Vega’s accomplishment is astonishing.

Featuring their Pixies inspired loud-soft alternating sections, “Lithium” became a huge hit for Nirvana when it was released as the third single from their 1992 legendary Grunge album Nevermind. The song, and album, would become a beloved track for many Grunge and Alt-Rock fans the world over, and a death blow for the hair bands of the ‘80s who were blown out of the radio waves when Nirvana and their unique Seattle sound took the music world by storm. Though Nirvana would only be around for a short time after their breakout album was released, their influence is still felt in almost every rock band to this day.

With her sultry vocals, jazzy harmonies and cool, laid back grooves, vocalist and songwriter Norah Jones went in a new direction with her 2009 release “Chasing Pirates.” The daughter of famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar, Jones has music in her blood and it has helped her climb to the top of the jazz charts, and make her a crossover success in the pop world as well. With the song’s skeleton written, Jones sat down with a few of her friends at her house to work out the final arrangement of the song. The end result garnered the singer her third Grammy nomination, though she didn’t win the award, and a huge pop success in the process.
