“I think it was a great first night. It was heartwarming to see so many people from both the DMV and music communities come out to support our new venue. It was an outstanding first night with many more to come!” – Michael DeMarco

Being 54 years old and 20 years into my career as a music journalist, it’s very rare for me to find bands like Frost* that really impact me, but when that happens, it renews my faith in music. Going through some releases on the Inside Out record label, I came across this album and it blew my mind. Imagine if Peter Gabriel had never left Genesi

Madam Adam conjures forth a debut album thick with stadium-worthy anthems recalling the brightest spots of the Seattle grunge movement, the sexual bombast of ’70s AM radio rock and the exuberance of four people who live, breathe and devour music.

Many rock bands like to talk about their compassion for a cause, whether it be poverty, global warming or war, but few really put their money where their mouths are as did Alt-Rockers Cake when the recorded their latest release, 2011’s Showroom Of Compassion. Completely refitting their recording studio with solar panels, the band recorded the entire album with solar power, a testament to their commitment to using and promoting alternative energies. When Cake gets behind an idea and a project, they definitely follow through.

One thing you learn really quickly in this business is to listen to the buzz. The buzz tells you what hot new band is worth tracking down when you’re surfing the net for your next download. It informs you what concerts you should drive two hours out of your way for. Telling you which ones are important enough to grab your tickets in advance and gather your friends at the local venue so that you can check them out on a Friday night.

The opposite is true of OC-based band The Opera, who is billed as a “progressive” and “experimental” modern rock group that claims Nirvana and Muse as major influences.

Brad Barr is one of those truly amazing guitarists on the scene today. He has the ability to mix, fuse, and transcend styles that range from jazz, folk, rock, experimental, indie, improvisation, flamenco, and more, which really helps to give him a unique sound that’s all his own.

A seemingly insignificant event happened last weekend: two touring bands from the Bay Area played in the basement of the Double Door in Chicago to a measly crowd of about twenty people. To anyone not in the “Dirtroom,” this paltry concert might as well have not happened at all, and this truth is incredibly unfortunate.

It isn’t often that I come across an album that’s so good I have to listen to it multiple times in a row. When I sat down to check out Devi’s album Get Free I found myself doing just that
