Guitarists hate to change their strings, it’s just a fact. There’s a well-spoken myth that floats around the guitar world that players want to make it big so they can have fame and fortune. The truth is, we all want to make it big so we can afford to pay someone to change our strings for us on a regular basis. Imagine how cool it would be to be able to play on fresh strings all the time, without having to sit there are change them every 3 to 4 days when they begin to wear out.

With the economy taking a nosedive a few years back, it seems that two new paradigms have emerged in the guitar manufacturing sector. The first is that big companies such as Gibson and Fender lowered the prices of their products during the downturn, making their instruments more accessible to the average person, which many people took advantage of. But, there was also another more unexpected byproduct of the recession. People began looking for high-quality instruments that would give them the best bang for their buck.

As guitarists, we spend countless hours searching for the perfect tone. We go through dozens of guitars over the years, waiting for the perfect axe to fall into our hands. We bring together every possible combination of heads and cabinets, combos and all-in-ones, tubes and transistors, trying to find the exact combination to bring to live the sound that’s floating around in our heads.

We guitarists tend to fall into two camps: those of us, typically classical and folk players, who revere the history of the instrument and value heritage and legacy over innovation; and those of us, typically rock and jazz players, who applaud the pioneers and mad scientists whose breakthroughs changed the way we think about the instrument.

I own precisely 29 books. Not much of a library for someone writing a book review. The number, to a book, is 29 because I counted them this morning. Though an avid reader, three years ago I sold, gave away, or abandoned every book I owned that didn’t mean something significant to me. I wanted to travel light when I moved from California to Portugal.
