Iron Man
Telling the story of a time traveller who witnesses the apocalypse, before returning to the present day, being transformed into metal and then after being mocked, starting the very destruction he witnessed in the future, Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” is one of the most memorable and covered songs in rock history. Originally called “Iron Bloke,” after Ozzy Osbourne heard Toni Iommi play the opening riff for the first time, the song’s title was later changed and a world-wide hit was born.
Alongside “Stairway to Heaven” and “Smoke on the Water,” “Iron Man” is probably the third most popular rock guitar riff of the 1970s, and can still be heard being played by aspiring guitarists in bedrooms and Guitar Centers across the country. Besides having a classic and powerful opening riff, the song is broken into several sections, with each offering up some tasty riffs and chords for guitarists to get under their fingers.
