Charlie Gilmour, the son of Pink Floyd guitar legend David Gilmour, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for violent disorder.

NME is reporting that the 21 year-old Gilmour was arrested and imprisoned after films surfaced of him throwing a trash can at a car transporting Prince Charles and defacing the Cenotaph (which commemorates the British war dead) in London. Gilmour, who was a student at London’s Cambridge University at the time, has apologized for his actions since the incident.

Although he plead guilty to the charge of violent disorder, today at Kingston Crown Court Gilmour said that he does not remember attacking Prince Charles’ car and that he wasn’t aware of what the Cenotaph represents before defacing it. He also stated that he had taken valium and LSD before committing both acts.

Nicholas Price, the judge presiding over the proceedings, had this to say about the behavior of the guitarist’s son: “Such outrageous and deeply offensive behaviour gives a clear indication of how out of control you were that day. It caused public outrage and understandably so.”

Price continued, dismissing the claim of ignorance regarding the Cenotaph: “For a young man of your intelligence and education and background to profess to not know what the Cenotaph represents defies belief. You have shown disrespect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to those who fell defending this country.”
