Usually when two bands co-headline a show, one still opens for the other. Maybe if they co-headline a tour, they switch off actually headlining. In the case of Weezer and the Flaming Lips, they will actually and literally share the stage with each other.
According to Pitchfork, on July 28th and 29th, the two bands will set up their equipment next to each other on stage and take turns. These two shows, which will be in Holmdel, New Jersey and the PNC Bank Arts Center and in Wantagh, New York at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, may have an unprecedented approach, but these are the two bands to pull it off. Indie dance-rockers Yeasayer are opening both of those dates.
There is no word yet on how much Weezer and the Lips will interact with each other or play together on songs, but in any case, it should be interesting. According to a press release, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo said, “I asked Wayne [Coyne of the Flaming Lips] if he has an extra bubble I could ride in.” Two Space Bubbles? Preposterous!
In other Flaming Lips news, Wayne Coyne recently Tweeted about the Lips’ collaboration with infamous noise rockers Lightning Bolt, saying, “Mixing the final master of Flaming Lips/Lightning Bolt tracks!!!!” A look at any YouTube video of Lightning Bolt playing live is all anyone needs to know that this will be a great combination of talents.
