Dream Theater Heads Into Studio to Finish New Album

By: Staff

James LaBrie, vocalist of legendary progressive metal band Dream Theater, recently told Rock Radio (U.K.) that mixing of their new album will begin by the end of May. The as-yet-unnamed follow-up to their 2009 album Black Clouds & Silver Linings is still being tracked at the moment, with LaBrie and keyboardist/sound designer Jordan Rudess finishing up their parts.

LaBrie said, “The drums, the guitar and the bass are all done, so it’s just a matter of Jordan and I finishing our parts, and the mix is to commence… I think May 30 or the 31st we’re supposed to start mixing the album.”

The new album, which is supposed to have an early September release (around the 7th or 10th, according to LaBrie), will be the first ever Dream Theater album to feature someone other than founding member Mike Portnoy on drums. In his stead, Mike Mangini will be handling the skins.

Speaking to Music Radar, Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci said of Mangini: “The guy is… he’s out of his mind! [laughs] People are not going to believe how great he is… Mike Mangini’s playing style is different [than Portnoy’s]. He plays very hard, but he’s got a very deep groove. He’s extremely locked in, but if he does do something technical, he’s still right there.”
