Recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 1969 by the Rolling Stones, the plaintive track “Wild Horses” quickly became a tune that acoustic players grabbed hold of when it hit the airwaves in 1971. The track had been released a year earlier than the Stone’s album, Sticky Fingers, by The Flying Burrito Brothers on the band’s Burrito Deluxe album. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “Wild Horses” landed the #28 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in June 1971.
The Stones were part of the ‘60s British Invasion era, countering The Beatles pop sound with their bad boy British blues rock. Vocalist, Mick Jagger would evolve from being a performer planted center stage in the early days to one of the most vampy and theatrical of music masters in the world. And today, the Stones have sold over 200 million albums with Sticky Fingers starting a string of #1 albums, and in 1989 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From their early days in 1962, the Stones have ridden the crest of rock ‘n’ roll for nearly 50 years and nearly always included in their hard rock-blues performances is the lament, “Wild Horses,” a crowd favorite.
