Broken by Seether
South African band, Seether, began its career as Saron Gas and released its first album, Fragile, under the former name before the group agreed to change it at the behest of their label, Wind-Up Records, give the names familiarity with sarin gas, a deadly nerve agent. The group came up with the name Seether, the title of a single released in 1994, by Veruca Salt named Seether.
Originally formed in 1999 and the band now includes: Shaun Morgan (vocals/guitar); Dale Stewart (bass); John Humphrey (drums); and Troy McLawhorn (lead guitar). The group’s alternative rock music has been called “post-grunge”, although there’s certainly strong influence from that style with some fans calling it “mongrel rock.”
Seether’s acoustic track, “Broken” was produced for their debut album, Disclaimer. An electric version of “Broken” was recorded in 2004 with Evanescence singer, Amy Lee, working vocals with Shaun Morgan. The song was used on the soundtrack for the film, The Punisher, and with the huge success of the movie, “Broken” became a hit and helped launch Seether to international prominence. On Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, “Broken” reached the #20 spot and was certified gold by RIAA.
