System of a Down Chop Suey
Even though the song was nominated for a Grammy award in 2001, “Chop Suey” would end up causing quite the amount of controversy for modern rockers System of a Down. The song was released on the band’s album Toxicity, which happened to be number one on the charts on 9/11, causing the Clear Channel network to send out a note to all of its programmers to remove the song due to its lyrics revolving around death. While the network didn’t officially ban the song outright, their “suggestion” was taken seriously by programmers and the song was largely removed from airplay during this time. Though this was a blow to the band, the song has remained as one of their biggest and most memorable hits.
From a guitarist’s standpoint, “Chop Suey” is a lesson in syncopation, both from a rhythm and lead standpoint. Both guitar parts make use of odd-rhythmic groupings to enhance their parts, rather than simply relying on a more standard strumming pattern to get their point across. There are also several cool uses of spacing and silence that occur throughout different parts of the song. These sections will not only test your muting ability, but will get you counting along in order to really nail down those sections. Overall this is a fun and very cool song to get under your fingers as a guitarist.
