Tool Schism
“Schism” was the lead-off single for Tool’s 2002 album Lateralus, picking up a Grammy for best Metal Performance along the way. Band members Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor, in typical Tool fashion, thanked their parents, Satan and the bassist went on to thank his dad for doing his mom, during the band’s Grammy acceptance speech. Not quite the Guns n Roses performance at the AMA’s, but it grabbed some attention from the press none the less.
The song features an array of different time signatures, a staple of any Tool song, especially those written from Aenima onward. The song changes meter a total of 47 times, compared to any other rock song which normally would feature one or at the most two time signatures. The constant meter changes make this song hard to learn from the written page from a rhythmic perspective. Those brave enough to get this track under their fingers might do well to learn the notes from the TAB, then just listen to the song and “feel” the length of each riff and section. It’s not very scientific, but often times counting through a song like this will only make it harder to learn.
There is also a plethora of effects going on in both the guitar and bass parts. If you’re getting ready to learn “Schism” then make sure you have a full rack of effects to draw upon in order to match the tones that guitarist Adam Jones conjures up throughout the track. This isn’t an easy song to learn, but tackling it will be a fun challenge to anyone who’s ready to step up to the plate.
