Before it was immortalized by Christopher Walken and Will Farrell on the infamous “more cowbell” sketch on Saturday Night Live, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” was the biggest hit for ‘70s rockers Blue Oyster Cult. Filled with lyrics revolving around death, including the world’s most famous lovers Romeo and Juliet, the song is also contains some of the band’s best guitar work, and a few riffs that are essential to any ‘70s rock fans bag of licks.
Opening with an arpeggiated, three-chord guitar riff, the song builds from there with its use of power chords, fills, guitar sound effects and a lengthy guitar solo that, unfortunately, was cut from the original single release. One of the most interesting, and most difficult to nail down, moments in the song comes at the start of the guitar solo. Attacking the strings with a flurried, frenzy of notes the solo bursts out of the subdued, palm-muted pre-solo section, drawing from exotic scales and playing with the rhythm just enough to make the lines easy to learn on their own, but tricky to match just right with the recording. Give it a try, sounds easy, but this solo is just challenging enough to keep your interest while remaining fun throughout the learning process.
