If there’s a more emblematic ‘80s L.A. metal song than “Sweet Child of Mine” then we have yet to hear it. This song has everything. Strong lyrics, one of the most recognizable intro of all time, pounding rhythm guitar and a guitar solo that is at some points melodic and at others blazing with killer technical prowess. If the ‘80s metal scene could be summed up in one track it just might be “Sweet Child.”
Released in 1987, on the album Appetite for Destruction, the song went on to reach the top of the Billboard charts, oddly enough it would be the band’s first and only number 1 single in their long and illustrious career. While many consider “Welcome to the Jungle” to be the song that launched the band into stardom, it was “Sweet Child of Mine,” especially the opening riff and solo, that cemented Slash as a Guitar God and one of the top players of his generation.
The crazy thing about “Sweet Child” is that it was originally written as a joke, as a “circus” riff that Slash came up with one day while joking around with Duff McKagan and Steven Adler. Overhearing the joking around, Axl Rose was inspired to write lyrics about his girlfriend at the time and the song was born. Really, a joke? I think most of us would kill to come up with a riff like that. Just goes to show, even if you don’t love a riff or lick that you come up with, keep everything on tape, because you never know when an Axl Rose will overhear it and turn it into a world-wide sensation.
