On February 3rd 1959 the Music Died. Three of rock’s most famous, and promising, acts had their lives suddenly taken in a tragic plane crash that rocked the music world and took everyone by surprise. When Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper lost their lives in that memorable accident, newspapers and magazines across the globe tried their best to memorialize that moment, but none would come close to a young singer-songwriter named Don MacLean with his immortal work “American Pie.”
Because of the song’s length, over 8 minutes in total, it was originally broken up into two singles, both around 4 minutes long. Due to the its unusual length many radio stations because only playing one or the other, but after fans started calling in to request the song they changed their tune and ran the song in its entirety. Besides “’In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” and “Stairway to Heaven,” “American Pie” is one of the few songs of this length to be granted a full playing on radio stations, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Besides being a fun song to play on the guitar, “American Pie” is a great song to learn how to sing and strum along to. The lyrics have been to topic for much discussion over the years, with radio stations and fans coming up with their own interpretations of what each line and character in the story means. But, when asked about the meaning of the song’s lyrics McLean simply replied, “The mean I didn’t have to work again.”
