Dominated by Grunge and Alternative Rock the ‘90s were a period of dark, brooding music that spoke directly to teenage angst and the struggles that people, and society as a whole, were dealing with during the Generation X decade. Though many bands chose to focus on writing darker music, both lyrically and musically, Stockholm, Georgia band Collective Soul released a single that would go against the grain and become a huge hit for the band. With positive lyrics, monster guitar playing and a catchy vocal line, “Shine” has become one of the decade’s most known songs and one that has challenged guitarists since it hit the airwaves in 1993.
With its positively influenced lyrics, and many references to Heaven in the song’s chorus, “Shine” is often misconstrued as a Christian rock song, and Collective Soul has since been pegged as a Christian Rock band. Band members have denied this during many interviews and sound clips, but these associations persist. At one point, lead singer Ed Roland commented that Led Zeppelin referenced Heaven in their music and they aren’t considered a Christian rock band. Even with statements like this the band has not been able to distance itself from this label and this genre of music.
From a guitar standpoint “Shine” is a powerhouse. Killer intro riff, solid chord work and a blazing solo all permeate the song’s four and a half minute length. This is definitely an advanced tune for guitarists to tackle, but once these riffs and chords are under your fingers all the hard work will definitely seem worth it.
