by Vince Lewis
Guitarist Dave Stryker and Saxophonist Steve Slagle continue to produce exciting music. Keeper is their fifth album together, and the third with Jay Anderson (bass) and Victor Lewis (drums). The players are perfectly matched in terms of style and virtuosity. Stryker manages to blend the old and the new perfectly. His sound is traditional and full, and his solos move logically through the chord changes. Slagle’s phrasing and improvisational approach is similar and complementary. Their collective influences and experiences have helped to form an excellent union.
The rhythmically punctuated title track “Keeper” opens the festivities. It is a Stryker composition, and combines funk with a simply modern jazz approach. “Bailout” is a minor blues penned by Slagle. There is an even balance of original material from both leaders. Each tune is interesting and showcases their abilities as performers and writers.
Other tracks include “Came to Believe,” “Bryce’s Piece,” “Blue State,” “Gold Dust” and “Good 4 U.”
There is a solid treatment of the Thelonious Monk ballad “Ruby My Dear.” Whether playing the melody in unison, or simply playing off of each other, Slagle and Stryker are perfectly in sync. Lewis and Anderson provide the driving and responsive rhythm section that soloists dream of.
This is the third opportunity that I have had to review Stryker and Slagle. I always look forward to hearing them and am never disappointed. This is a band that has much to offer. It should appeal both to traditional jazz audiences and those who appreciate the more modern approach. High quality and well seasoned musicians show they are capable of both. This group is the perfect example of just that.
