Regarded by some of the biggest names in the business as the one of the greatest Metal bands of all time, Steel Panther has been called “absolutely groundbreaking” by Dave Navarro and “they had it all going on” by Dee Snyder. While they were a band on the rise, coming out of the Sunset Strip in the ‘80s, they fell on hard times, and as Guns’ n Roses drummer Matt Sorum once asked, “What ever happened to those assholes?”

Though it was written by classical composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, “Flight of the Bumblebee” has since become a favorite vehicle for guitarists to prove their mettle as the fastest, baddest player around. The song was used in 2008 by virtuoso, Brazilian speed-picker Tiago Della Vega to set the Guinness record for the fastest guitarist alive. Vega performed the piece in a wide swath of tempos, starting with a relatively slow speed and working his way up to the mind-boggling 320 beats per minute, all while looking like he barely breaks a sweat. It may not be the most musical thing in the world, but from a purely technical standpoint Vega’s accomplishment is astonishing.

Featuring their Pixies inspired loud-soft alternating sections, “Lithium” became a huge hit for Nirvana when it was released as the third single from their 1992 legendary Grunge album Nevermind. The song, and album, would become a beloved track for many Grunge and Alt-Rock fans the world over, and a death blow for the hair bands of the ‘80s who were blown out of the radio waves when Nirvana and their unique Seattle sound took the music world by storm. Though Nirvana would only be around for a short time after their breakout album was released, their influence is still felt in almost every rock band to this day.

Nashville has long been known for helping to define the Country music landscape, both traditionally and on the modern scene. Just about every major Country artist has either recorded or spent time in the city, helping to coin its nickname as the “Music City.” But, if you look a little deeper, beyond the Country façade, you can find some amazingly talented Rock bands that are making a name for themselves in Nashville and beyond. Bands such as Fools for Rowan, who, with their high-energy Rock, screaming leads and poignant lyrics, are proving that Nashville isn’t all about Stetsons, acoustic guitars and Country ballads. These guys and gals can really rock, regardless of what city they’re from.

Improvisation in a musical context is often a lot harder than most people will think. When listening to a Jazz or Blues musician get up on stage and improvise a solo, it often sounds as if they’re just making it up on the spot, but what people don’t see is the countless hours spend in the practice room, rehearsals and jam sessions to get to that point.

Vocalist and keyboardist Neal Morse is a busy guy, and he likes it that way. Not only did he recently finish a tour with Mike Portnoy’s Yellow Matter Custard Beatle’s cover band, he is currently in the studio finishing up two new album, Testimony 2, the follow up to highly received 2003 album and the first album with a new project featuring Portnoy, Steve Morse, Casey McPherson and Dave LaRue. Most artist would be happy working on one of these projects in any given year, but for a workhorse like Morse, it’s business as usual.
