Stray Cat Strut

Thirty years ago the Stray Cats, with Brian Setzer, issued their debut album titled Stray Cat Strut, with the title song later being released on their U.S. album Built for Speed in 1982. The tune hit the charts in the U.S. ratcheting its way up to the #3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Brian Setzer has always leaned toward the old ‘50s style rock with a bit of bebop and rockabilly influences. Armed with an iconic Brian Setzer Signature Model Gretsch guitar, Brian rocks, croons and jazzes things up, finding a unique niche for himself in the contemporary music scene. During the early ‘80s, the Stray Cats found themselves in London and in the middle of the thriving punk scene.

Their stripped down rockabilly sound captured the imagination of British teens, as well as singer-songwriter and producer, Dave Edmunds. By 1982, Brian and crew released two albums in England and gained the attention back in the U.S.A. when they released Built for Speed, an album that secured them a couple of Top Ten hits, “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut.”

After the Stray Cats broke up in ’84, Brian went on to play guitar for Robert Plant’s touring group, The Honeydrippers. Ending that gig in 1986, Setzer found his way into acting and played the part of ‘50s rocker, Eddie Cochran, in the film La Bamba, a film about the late Ritchie Valens who died in the airplane crash that also took the lives of J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and Buddy Holly. ,p>
In the 1990s, Setzer would form The Brian Setzer Orchestra and continue on his road of hip jump blues that would propel his career forward with its hit single, “Jump, Jive and Wail”.
