Sublime Santeria
Borrowing the bassline from their previously released song “Lincoln Highway Dub,” California alt-rock band Sublime penned one of the band’s biggest hits, and one that lives on to this day, long after the death of legendary frontman Bradley Nowell. Telling the story of a jealous boyfriend who is chasing down his ex-girlfriend, the song would be included on the posthumous self-titled release that would end up selling more than 5 million albums. Though he passed away before the album and single were released, Nowell was included in the video for “Santeria” after the band used archived footage of the singer in order to include their lost bandmate in the video.
Kicking off with a series of arpeggios, the song then features the characteristic reggae-based strumming pattern that is a staple of any punk-ska band, of which Sublime was one. Though the main focus of the guitar part is the rhythm track, there is also a short, blues-based solo around the middle to of the song. Loosely quoting the melody from the song’s vocal line, and mixing in a few notes from the related mode, the solo is largely based upon the blues scale, and uses some great double-stop blues lines that would make a great addition to any guitarist’s vocabulary.
