Three Days Grace Break
“Break” is the flagship single for Canadian rock band Three Days Grace’s 2009 album Life Starts Now. The song, and the rest of the album, was written after the band had been on the road for five years and was intended to be me more musically in-depth and personal record, two characteristics that shone through on the recording and that have helped make it the band’s best-selling and charting record to date. After selling almost 80 thousand records in the first week alone, Life Starts Now would eventually peak at number 3 on the Billboard charts and at number 2 on the Canadian album charts.
Both guitar parts, rhythm and lead, offer something cool and fun when learning this song. From the driving, quickly changing power chord riff, to the single-line melody sections strewn throughout the song, there’s something for every guitarist to dig in on when getting this song under their fingers. One of the trickier aspects of the song is nailing the tone for both the chord and lead parts. Though it sounds as if they’ve just turned their amps to 11 and cranked out the song, it’s not that easy. So, if you’re learning to play “Break,” take a few minutes and tweak your tone to match the recording. It might take some time, but once you have that crunch running through your rig you’ll be glad you found it.
