Motorhead Ace of Spades
With an intro that is as heavy as any ‘80s metal track, a simple yet killer guitar solo, and the “chewing on gravel” vocals of lead singer and bassist extraordinaire Lemmy, “Ace of Spades” has not only become Motorhead’s iconic track, but it proved to the world that you didn’t have to sacrifice heaviness to have a hit song. Released in 1980, the song would set the stage for the Thrash Metal genre to burst onto record store shelves across the globe. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that if not for the success of “Ace of Spades,” bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer would have had a much harder time getting attention from record companies and radio stations when they started to get their big breaks in the industry.
For guitarists, the song is typical of most Thrash Metal tracks, where the emphasis is on the fast strumming right hand, as you lay down simple power chords with your left hand. Though there’s a guitar solo in the song, this is one of those rare cases where the rhythm track will take more work to get under your fingers, as you build up the stamina needed to make it through the entire track. Try it out. It’s a classic song and one that will raise your right-hand speed and endurance to all new levels.
