Overview: What Makes This Song Great

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Genre: Classic Rock
  • Guitar TAB: Available Here

Rock ‘n’ Roll doesn’t get much more basic than The Arrows 1975 song, “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” a track that started out as a B-side for the group’s song “Broken Down Heart.” The band was British, but the co-writer of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” was Alan Merrill, a New Yorker, who had earlier moved to Japan to make a name for himself. He would later move to England and join The Arrows, a popular band that would eventually get their own television show in the U.K., but not get top billing for their song. That would come later, when it nailed the #1 slot in 1981 for eight weeks in the U.S., when Joan Jett & The Blackhearts released their cover of it.

Not to minimize Jett’s version or her talent, but by getting her version on the then new television stations MTV, the record got some great airplay that helped it move up the charts. Since that time, “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” has become Joan Jett’s black leather rock rant anthem. Joan (Joan Marie Larkin) has often been called the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and her magnetic stage presence, raunchy rock riffs and sneering gritty style continue to propel her rock career.

Her version of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” ranks on Billboard’s chart at #28, as one of the best rock songs of all time. As a guitarist, Jett has been ranked #87 as one of the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. The guitar TAB for “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” readily translates for the 1983 parody of the song by Weird Al Yankovich, who recorded “I Love Rocky Road”, while he honks along on his accordian.
