Australian rockers, Jet, got together in 2001 in Melbourne and within two years released their first album, Get Born, which gathered up a whopping 3.5 million album sales. “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and “Rollover DJ,” both from the album, were ranked #1 and #19, respectively on Australia’s Triple J radio stations Hottest 100. The album’s name was a tribute to Jason Bourne, the lead character in one of the band’s favorite films, The Bourne Identity.

It doesn’t take much to hear the Motown influences on the tracks beat. Listen to The Supreme’s “You Can’t Hurry Love” and it’s pretty clear that Jet grabbed the sound from the trio. But, then have a listen to Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” and you’ll hear more than a passing similarity. Still, Jet hammered out its own identity with their songs melody and lyrics.

In 2004, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” was nominated for Best Rock Video, Best New Artist and Best Editing at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards and won the nomination for Best Rock Video. Back home in Australia, they received seven nominations at the 2004 Australian Record Industry Association Awards (ARIA) in the following categories: “Album of the Year,” “Single of the Year” (Are You Gonna Be My Girl”), “Best Group,” “Best Rock Album: Breakthrough Artist – Album,” “Breathrough Artist – Single” (Are You Gonna Be My Girl), and “Highest Selling Album,” then won six of the seven categories.
