“Carry on My Wayward Son” is a must learn guitar tour de force written by progressive rock band Kansas. Featuring a killer electric track, tripled lead riffs and a beautifully written acoustic guitar track, the song offers a little of everything for the guitarist looking to explore the prog-rock genre, or just improve their chops while learning a fun song at the same time.
While many guitarists will recognize the distinctive opening riff, played on electric guitar, one of the most interesting and challenging aspects to the song is the fingerpicked acoustic part that first enters in immediately after the intro. Along with “Dust in the Wind,” this song offers Kansas fans a chance to learn and play along with a very cool and instructive finger-picked chord progression. Using the thumb and three fingers in your picking hand, this short acoustic section will raise the fingerpicking dexterity of anyone who tackles this often understated section of the song.
For those electric guitar players in the room, “Carry On” also features a killer guitar solo about half-way through the track. With trills, bends, doubled-lead lines and great one, this solo has a little bit of everything to offer guitarists of all levels who are looking to build their lead playing vocabulary.
