After being together as a band for ten years, modern rockers Nevereven have grown as both individual musicians and as a unit as a whole. There are experiences, both personal and musical, that can only be learned by spending years in the jam room, on stage and in the recording studio together, and Nevereven have not only been outlasting many other modern rock bands, they have been growing as a unit the whole time. With a decade of gigs, jams and recording sessions behind them, the group brings their mature sound to their latest record, 2011’s The Progress of Disaster, a five-song EP filled with hard-rockin’, no holds barred tracks.

It’s London, May 28, 2007 and I’m with a rock icon, drummer Simon Kirke, the backseat driver of two legendary hard rock bands, Free and Bad Company. People know Simon as “the drummer”, but hand the softly spoken Englishman a guitar and he’ll pull out the stops. He is also an accomplished singer and songwriter equally adept at piano and on guitar. Before he helped found the group Free, he could be heard pounding his U.K made Hayman drum kit with an actor’s son and child prodigy blues guitarist, Paul Kossoff in a group named Black Cat Bones.

John Scofield is a fellow guitarist whose recordings I am always pleased to see hit my mailbox for review. His albums are always interesting and varied musically. There is no doubt that Scofield not only enjoys many genres, and he is more than capable of proving quality music in them as well.

As I’ve already detailed, the festival grounds for Dave Matthews Band Caravan in Chicago left a lot to be desired, including not having to dig wood chips out of my shoes every two minutes. Other complaints were transportation, food and beverage prices (although that’s a constant for every festival ever), sound bleeding, and scheduling, but the lineup is most definitely not on that list.

As the story goes, Ratt helped pioneer Hollywood’s legendary Sunset Strip sound and scene. After an 11 year wait, the band returned in April of 2010 sounding fired up and better than ever with Infestation, a heavy, riff driven CD reminiscent of their early days as a band. Ratt was able to reinvent their sound by rediscovering their strengths, shuttling listeners to a time when metal ruled the earth and real musicians wore spandex and make-up.

“Summer of ’69” is one of those songs everybody knows the words to even if they’ve only heard it once or twice, probably because of all the cliches in the lyrics. But it’s those cliches that helped make Bryan Adams famous. Adams and Jim Vallance have given different accounts of the subject matter of “Summer of ’69”, but whether it’s about the sex position or the actual year, it’s the nostalgia that counts. Instantly relatable to anyone with a past, Bryan Adams set the standard for nostalgic naivety with this feel-good number. One of the few songs that is on both best-of lists (Blender’s Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s, Charattack’s 50 Best Canadian Singles of All Time, and more) and worst-of lists (Time magazine’s Top 10 Worst Songs of Summer and others), “Summer of ’69” is timeless nonetheless. Play this, and everyone will sing along when you get to “those were the best days of my life!”
