Queensrÿche Live: 30 Years and Still Going Strong

Mid-way into tonight’s set, singer Geoff Tate told the crowd, “It’s been 30 years since the band formed. We can’t live in the past because it already happened and we can’t live in the future, so we can only live in the present and enjoy the moment.” He then asked the crowd, “Are you enjoying yourself tonight?” the crowd responded with a thunderous applaud in agreement. That set the tone for tonight’s show!

Tennessee Guitar Festival 2011 Review

Tennessee Guitar Festival 2011 Review

We now give you my long, overdue review of Middle Tennessee State University’s Tennessee Guitar Festival 2011, hosted by Dr. William Yelverton on June 1st-4th, 2011. I know these things are supposed to come out right after the event happens, so my apologies for that. The only excuse I have is that I’ve been on two continents, 13 different states (11 U.S. and two Brazilian), and have traveled almost the distance of the circumference of our planet since then. I won’t apologize for that, though. I had a blast!

Matt Palmer’s The Virtuoso Guitarist Volume 1: A New Approach to Fast Scales just came out a few months ago and it’s already on its 2nd printing! I’ve had the great opportunity to preview it and give feedback, and review it and do the same.

Matt does an excellent job of explaining his technique throughout the book, first giving a brief history of how he developed his technique, and then a complete run down between the approaches to both hands.

Chicago Dave Matthews Band Caravan A Success Despite Terrible Venue

Chicago Dave Matthews Band Caravan A Success Despite Terrible Venue

Experiments can sometimes go horribly wrong. Beakers can boil over, frogs can mutate, and people can accidentally create unstable explosives when they are just trying to make a precipitate form in a solution. The Chicago edition of Dave Matthews Band Caravan was definitely an experiment, and although no unstable explosives killed anyone, not everything was peachy and wonderful.

Meatloaf had to be “well done” while performing at Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning at Solberg Airport in NJ on one of the hottest summer days this past Sunday. Dress in black from head-to-toe, the 63 year old singer hit the stage at 4:00 pm with his 7 piece band, including guitarists Paul Crook and Randy Flowers. When most people were looking for shade or dousing themselves with water, Meat was cooking on the sun-drenched stage and rockin’ out.

From the stage at the Mayo Center in Morristown NJ, Wildman Ted Nugent yelled down to the audience “Do I know how to piss people off well?” The crowd answered with a thunderous applause, with a resounding “yes.” Though that statement rings true with regard to Ted’s irreverent political rhetoric and unbridled candor, he’s also known in the Rock n Roll community as an icon and guitar god.

Kyle Rowland Lights Up The Monterey Blues Festival

Kyle Rowland Lights Up The Monterey Blues Festival

After attending the Monterey Blues Festival for several years running, this was the first year the weather threw me a curve. With the festival held a little over a mile from Monterey Bay, it’s typically cool in the morning, heats up during the day, and cools down again at night. With that scenario in mind I showed up at 11 am wearing only shorts and a T-shirt. It didn’t take long before I was chilled and there weren’t any indications that it was ever going to warm up. It looked like a long, uncomfortable day. Back at the car sat my long pants, extra shirt, and a jacket. A lot of good they were going to do me. The festival only allows in and out privileges to a special few, and I wasn’t one of them this year. Luckily I ran into a friend (who shall remain nameless), who was one of those few. He lent me his special wristband that allowed in-and-out access, and I quickly exited. Even though my Miata was parked on a busy public boulevard, I managed to shimmy into warmer clothes within its tight confines. Warmly dressed, I returned to the festival.
