Guitar International will be rolling out its Annual Guitar International Awards 2021, by category this year, with a combined article once we announce all awardees.
For a few years, guitarist extraordinaire, Yasmin Williams, caused some groundswell buzz wherever and whenever she performed in her local DC-MD-VA area, and when she’d won some awards from the Songwriters’ of Washington for her compositions and recordings. And to many it seemed, it was only a matter of time before others would “discover” her as a talent of grand proportion.
And so it goes, her budding career blossomed with support from none other than the phenomenal acoustic guitar giant, Tommy Emmanuel.
With her guitar resting across her lap, Yasmin strums, taps, plucks and charms ear worm rhythms and melodies from her amped acoustics, while she nails down divine original compositions for her audiences to listen to in sublime waves. Her first outing to the 2021 Newport Folk Festival (Folk On) ended with a full house standing ovation under the big tent, and all were gifted with her joyful smile.
And to put this emergence into proportion, it was about two years ago, when our publisher first saw her play for an outdoor Virginia family festival, that she performed for an audience of eleven people! Her artistry was captivating with her personal understated charm drawing in the small group, as much as in Newport.
Ms. Williams has now performed more than a few openers for Emmanuel, as well as The Indigo Girls and rumor has it that she’ll tour Europe when she can do so safely, given our current world-wide pandemic. In the meantime, let’s give her a listen!
Guitar International magazine is honored to present Yasmin Williams as our Emerging Best Guitarist of the Year 2021!
