Rory Gallagher’s third solo recording, Blueprint, takes us back to a format heard on the famed Irish guitarist’s first release, featuring Lou Martin on keys. The resulting sound is a blend of his previous two albums, combining an experimental attitude and sound with powerful melodies of different styles to achieve a wholly more mature, and refined musicianship.
Rod D’Ath replaces Wilgar Campbell on percussion for Gallagher’s third record, which actually lends a slightly tamer sound, shifting the focus back to Rory. But, by far the largest variation is Martin’s keyboard playing, making the whole group sound like a dirtier version of ‘60s L.A. legends The Doors, if they were fronted by Jimi Hendrix that is. This is unmistakably apparent on the epic, almost 9-minute tune, “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.” Long keyboard and guitar solos are taken in between the hypnotizing riffs of this cryptic jam.

Immediately following is “Unmilitary Two-Step,” a solo acoustic guitar instrumental in ragtime style. This further attests to Gallagher’s versatility on the guitar in any setting or style. Besides the clean lines and enthralling riffs, what really pulls you in is his unwavering sense of time. The capricious melodies almost mask the complexity of the guitar work, but this piece is arguably the highlight of the album.
“If I Had a Reason” follows, a country-style waltz ballad featuring Rory on slide guitar. This shift shows a warmer side to him, both in voice and guitar. There are many ways in which this could have come out Tacky, but once again, Rory shows true adaptability and feels right at home in this style.
From the moment you hear Blueprint, you immediately recognize the amazing quality of the recording. Everything is clean and perfectly mastered so as not to obscure the intricacy of the work within. It is a fitting presentation of Rory’s new sound and direction. This album would be a great pick-up for any Doors Diehards or Jimi fans.
