As Van Halen prepared to enter the studio to record their smash-hit album 1984, vocalist David Roth decided to meet his critics, who said that he only wrote songs about partying and sex, by writing a song about a car, in this moment “Panama” was born. The song depicts a car that Roth saw race in Las Vegas called “Panama Express.” To further the car motif in the song, guitarist Eddie Van Halen backed his Lamborghini up to the studio, attached a few mics to the exhaust system, and recorded the car for breakdown in the middle of the song. There are few songs that stand the test of time for Van Halen, or any band, than “Panama.”
