Released in 1973, “La Grange” became an instant hit for Texas rock band ZZ Top, and one of the band’s most successful singles in their long and prestigious careers. Written for their album Tres Hombres, the song, which is basically a one-chord blues, talks about a bordello in La Grange, Texas, the same bordello that was the inspiration behind the film “The Biggest Little Whore-House in Texas, which stared Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. The song’s main riff, which is one of the best in rock history, is based on the John Lee Hooker classic “Boogie Chillin,” which was ruled by the courts in 1972 to be in the public domain after a lawsuit was filed against ZZ Top for copyright infringement.
Though the main riff of this song has become a staple of many lick libraries over the years, the solo on “La Grange” is also worth learning as it contains some classic blues licks and killer tone and groove. Billy Gibbons is really at the top of his game on this one, which is saying something, so don’t stop after you’ve gotten the main lick under your fingers, dig into the solo, it’ll be worth the time it takes to get the solo down and those riffs in your vocabulary.
