When Radiohead broke into the charts with their song “Creep,” they fit right in with the grunge-alternative sound of the times, but they’re foray into the harder side of modern rock took a more personalized and unique twist when they wrote and recorded the song “Fake Plastic Trees.” While the song would mark a step in a different direction for the band, away from the grunge sound of “Creep” and more towards the haunting and experimental sound of their later work, the song almost didn’t happen.
After their record label at the time, Capitol, got a hold of the song they had a remix done which “grunged” it up, taking out all of the ethereal and personal touches the band had brought to the song. I’m sure Radiohead fans worldwide can agree that the band made the right choice when they stood by the original mix on the album’s release.
The guitar part on “Fake Plastic Trees” isn’t necessarily difficult, but that isn’t the point with any Radiohead song. The chord progression is fun and easy to learn, and the strumming pattern is familiar, yet has a few unique tweaks to it that makes it worthwhile to get under your fingers.
