“Symphony of Destruction” lays out a vision of an evil Pied Piper leading unwilling followers to destruction, all with a straight metal riff and a lean forward style. Written by Megadeth vocalist, Dave Mustaine, the song has become a favorite of the group’s fans. The track starts off with a classical instrumental disarray of musicians tuning up to Mozart’s Requiem, before riffing into a heavy repetitive dirge that pushes the lyrics along and freeing them up to be explored or enjoyed as light or even pop metal.
Given the songs simplicity and its ability to get a grip on metal heads, it’s been covered by a lot of groups including: Black Warrant, Fury, Hellsongs, Katalepsy and others. It’s also a “must play” song at Megadeth concerts and is all over the map as far as being featured on their CDs and DVDs.
Megadeth’s line up features Mustaine on vocals, Chris Broderick on guitar, Dave Ellefson on bass and Shawn Drover on drums and guitar. Marty, Dave and Nick all belly up as backing vocalists. The L.A. group formed in 1983 after Mustaine left Metallica and Megadeth quickly became one of the top metal groups in the world, along with Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer. With Mustaine at the helm, Megadeth has sold in excess of 25 million albums and the group has been nominated for Best Metal Performance nine times.
