In the fall of 1966, Jimi Hendrix was in London making a name for himself among the elite of British rock, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Who and others. With bassist and backing vocalist, Noel Redding, and drummer, Mitch Mitchell, the three would startle the world with the bluesy, psychedelic rock of their group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
The group would last only four years, but would release three albums showcasing the masterful playing of Hendrix that would cause a tectonic shift in the way guitarists would think of their instrument. Hendrix would unleash a new sonic landscape out of his axe that was other worldly, explosive, and exciting in a way that would burn its way into the way rock guitar would be played long into the future.
The track first appeared on the U.S. album release, Are You Experienced, and is played in F major, relying primarily on the F major pentatonic scale, but with a glassy overdubbed Strat. Hendrix laid down the track at Delane Lea Studios in London, with Chas Chandler in the control room and Dave Siddle, as the album’s engineer. According to the book, The Ultimate Hendrix, by John McDermott with Eddie Kramer and Billy Cox, Hendrix went back to the track and overdubbed it by Hendrix “playing ‘between,” as he called it, the notes he had already recorded, before finishing up the song with four or five overdubs.”
The album would garner accolades from all corners including being ranked the fifth greatest album of all time by TV channel VH1; #15 by Rolling Stone on its “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list; in 2003, Mojo named it the greatest guitar album of all time and in 2000, Guitar World magazine named it the greatest album of the Millennium.
