Overview: What Makes This Song Great

Are You Dead Yet Tab

Are You Dead Yet

Released in 2005 on the album of the same name, “Are You Dead Yet” featured several firsts for Finnish Metal band Children of Bodom. The album was the first to feature guitarist Roope Latvala, who took over guitar duties from the departing Alexander Kuoppala. As well, it was the first album to feature Drop C tuning, whereas the band had used the more common Drop D tuning on previous releases. The title comes from a night of drunken debachury that left guitarist Alexi Laiho in the hospital. When he awoke the next morning he looked in the mirror and asked himself “Have You Had Enough? Are You Dead Yet?” hence the title of both the song and the album.

The song features everything that makes Children of Bodom one of the biggest names in modern metal. The guitar parts range from smooth, legato lead lines, to thrashing power chords, to pinch harmonics and everything in between. There is also a healthy dose of dual lead lines, played by Laiho and Latvala in true metal fashion. The guitar solo is full of rippin’ metal lines, as well as cool guitar effects, which Laiho has become known for. Check it out, it’ll take some time to work out the effects, but it’s definitely worth having under your fingers in the long run.
