For a song that was written to stand against censorship in music, Alice in Chain’s hit single “Man in the Box” has been censored itself many time over the years. From the band’s Vevo YouTube channel, to radio, to the video game Rock Band 2, the song’s lyrics have been changed to be more family friendly, something that seems to go against the lyrical intend of the song. Though the changes are minor, changing two instances of the word shit to pit and spit, it still says something about today’s mass media where a song written about censorship is then censored itself.
From a guitarists standpoint the song is a great example of the dirty and gritty sound that helped define AIC’s sound as a band. Using a Talk Box, where one speaks or sings into an effects box while playing the guitar to add pitches, guitarist Jerry Cantrell and vocalist Layne Staley, who doubles the melody line, came together to create one of the most memorable riffs the ‘90s had to offer. While the Talk Box doesn’t always work, some exceptions are Peter Frampton and Ritchie Sambora’s use of the pedal, Cantrell’s tasteful application of the box adds just that extra personality to the song’s main riff, one that is as easily recognizable today as it was when it was first written.
