When a band’s first single off of their debut album is “Dream On,” as was the case with rock legends Aerosmith, there are not doubts that the band will go on to have a hugely successful career. Though the song has now become a staple of classic rock radio, and a fan favorite during the band’s concert, “Dream On” didn’t really make its mark when it was originally released back in 1973. It wasn’t until 1976, when it was re-released as a single did it climb the charts and help propel the Boston based band to international stardom.
The song has been a favorite to learn by guitarists ever since it was first released. The opening arpeggios themselves have become as iconic as the song itself, and are often heard in guitar stores across the country as often as Stairway. But, if one ventures past the opening phrase there is a plethora of great fingerpicking lines, blues riff and powerful chord progressions to keep us all busy in the practice room. Though “Dream On” owes a lot of its success to Steven Tyler’s vocals, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford’s guitar work is just as powerful, and when all three come together we get one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
