Not only did the song “Hells Bells” kick of ACDC’s 1980 smash-hit record Back in Black, it also marked the start of vocalist Brian Johnson’s tenure in the band, after original singer Bon Scott died earlier that year. Though the song caused little controversy when it was first released, 21 years later it received some special attention from the brass at Clear Channel as they added the song to a list of titles that they deemed unfit for airing after September 11th. Though the list was not a full-on ban, it was meant to suggest to radio stations that these songs, including “Hells Bells,” were not meant to be aired given the emotional climate of the time.
The song features an iconic riff by ACDC’s lead guitarist Angus Young, and the powerful opening has become one of the band’s best known riffs, and that’s saying something for a band that’s made a career out of creative memorable guitar hooks. As well, Angus’ solo is full of great blues-rock licks, with plenty of double-stop and sweet bends to satisfy the needs of any guitarist. Whether it’s the classic intro, driving rhythm part or screaming solo, “Hells Bells” is a must learn for any serious rock guitarist.
