The Stray Cats’ 1981 track “Rock This Town” was first released on the band’s debut, self-titled album before introducing the world to their jumpin’ and jivin’ on the 1982 American debut Built for Speed. Not only was the song the band’s first of three Top 10 hits, peaking at #9, it also introduced the world to a young guitarist who would go on to have a long and storied career, which continues to this day, Brian Setzer. Armed with his big-body Gretsch, Setzer made old-school rock, rockabilly and swing music cool again, introducing a whole new generation to music that had been pushed aside in the rising face of metal and pop-rock during the Decade of Decadence.
For guitarists, this song is a great introduction to Setzer’s guitar work, as well as rock n roll and rockabilly in general. There is a ton of great, Chuck Berryesque rhythm work, coupled with plenty of sweet, country based riffs and fills, all coming together to give players a wide swath of the different genres that inspired the Stray Cats, making them stand out against the rest of the early ‘80s music world at the same time. It’s not the hardest song in the books, but “Rock This Town” is a fun song to get under your fingers, and having a few extra rockabilly fills is always a good thing, they tend to come in handy at the weirdest times and places.
