STP Core
Stone Temple Pilot’s debut album, Core included the huge hit “Plush,” which ran up the U.S. charts landing at #1 on the Album Rock Tracks and #9 the Modern Rock Tracks Billboard charts. The San Diego group comprised of Scott Weiland (lead vocals), Robert DeLeo (bass), Dean DeLeo (guitar) and Eric Kretz (drums) gained a groundswell of fans in 1992 with the release of Core, and although the group’s initial “sound” was considered grunge, STP offered up music with a broader array of influences with succeeding albums.
STP did not take everyone by storm and in some circles were considered copyists of grunge. But, the band’s strong work ethic eventually paid off with huge ticket and album sales. The group’s mixed reception can best be exemplified by Rolling Stone magazine’s readers’ poll voting the group the Best New Band (1994), while the magazine’s music critics named STP the Worst New Band.
Breaking up in 2003, the group generated 16 top ten singles and record sales reaching over 40 million. And in 2004, the track “Plush” was awarded a Grammy for “Best Rock Performance” and the album Core was certified 8x platinum by RIAA. VH1 ranked Stone Temple Pilots at #40 on its 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock list.
