“Have to Say I Told You So” has become the signature song of Swedish garage rock band The Hives. Released on the band’s turn of the century album Veni Vidi Viscous, the song would raise eyebrows as it bears a strong similarity to the Kinks classic hit “All Day and All of the Night,” but not to the point of causing a lawsuit or related action. The song has long been a favorite of other musicians, and in 2002 the Foo Fighters performed a cover of the song in concert for the Hives, dressed in the Swedish band’s signature black suits for full effect.
Built around a four chord riff, played all in power-chords, the song also features several lead lines that help make it more of a challenge when getting this track down on the guitar. The tremolo, fast-picking, note that reoccurs during the song may seem simple at the outset, I mean it’s one note after all, but getting the exact timing down on this riff may be trickier than you think. We often just pick “fast” when it comes to a lick like this, but in order to really nail it with the recording we to play it exactly in time. Check it out, great riff and a great way to develop right-hand control.
