Tom Petty Free Fallin'
Taking only two days to write and record, “Free Fallin’” would become the first track recorded for Tom Petty’s 1989 solo album Full Moon Fever. Co-written with Jeff Lynne, the song would go on to become the longest charting song for Petty, and is now considered one of his most popular tracks from a long and very successful career. Though the album wouldn’t reach the number 1 spot on the charts, peaking at number 3 with “Free Fallin’” reaching number 7 on the singles charts, the song has remained as one of the decade’s most iconic rock tracks over 20 years later.
Featuring three distinct rhythm guitar tracks, “Free Fallin’” is a clinic on how to properly layer guitars on a modern rock record. As well, the song’s vocal melody sits well on the guitar, especially on a Strat set to the bridge pickup, and is a fun lead line to get under your fingers, especially when the vocal harmony kicks in during the chorus. There is also a lick on the lower strings that occurs about halfway through the song that, in typically Tom Petty fashion, is easy to learn, yet extremely hard to get out of your head once you’ve heard it.
