U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday

The opening track, and third single, from U2’s iconic 1983 album War, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” has become a staple of the band’s live shows for almost two decades. Lyrically the song talks about The Troubles in Northern Ireland, in particular the Bloody Sunday massacre where British soldier fired on and killed civil rights protesters. Alongside “New Year’s Day,” the song helped to bring U2’s music to a wider audience, helping to launch their international careers. The song has also been named on several lists of the best protest songs of the 20th century.

The opening guitar part has also become part of the rock-guitar lexicon. Featuring a simple arpeggiated line that outlines the chords Bm-D-G6, the riff helped to inspire countless guitarists in the 1980s to pick up their axes and learn to play along to The Edge’s guitar work on this song, and the rest of the album. The song’s solo is also on the simple side, but again very effective and powerful at the same time. It is a great window into The Edge’s playing, as it won’t take much effort to get under your fingers, and it showcases the time feel and harmonic choices that have come to define the Irish guitarists sound over the years.
