Weezer Buddy Holly
Though “Buddy Holly” helped launch the career of Rivers Cuomo and the band Weezer, the song almost didn’t make it onto the band’s self-titled debut album. It took some serious convincing from producer, and former Cars frontman, Ric Ocasek before Rivers agreed to include the song on the final set list. Originally written many years earlier, with a slower tempo and altered lyrics on the chorus, the song would go on to be a smash hit for the band, and the Happy Days themed video by Spike Jonze received major airplay on MTV and VH1 for most of 1994.
The song features a heavily-distorted rhythm track, which consists of mostly power chords with a characteristic Cuomo twist to them, as well as a dissonant and quirky lead part. The lead guitar part is divided into two distinct lines, the first being the short single-note fills and the second being the two-note harmonic riff that occurs in the middle of the track. The lead line climaxes during a short, but very interesting and fun to learn, solo that features one of the most memorable licks of the ‘90s, the ascending run that finishes on an upward and reverse bend at the end of the guitar solo.
Besides being a mega-hit for Weezer, “Buddy Holly” has long been a favorite of guitarists looking to improve their alt-rock chops. Check it out, it’s a fun to learn tune with some twists that’ll keep your fingers on their toes.
