Review of the GUZZ S3 Guitar Pick

It is not often that a refinement to a guitar accessory can be labeled as true innovation. Guitar picks have always differed in their material, shape and thickness. There have been production model picks made from tortoise shell, plastic, nylon and even stone. Having used the same medium gauge standard shape for so many years I was a little skeptical of a radical departure from the norm.

The principal creator and Director of the company is Jorge Guzman of Madrid, Spain. He spent over a year in England working to develop a truly different and interesting product. The S 3 pick truly stands alone in terms of its ability to produce wide differences in tone.

While maintaining the usual 3 sided shape, that is where the similarity to the traditional ends. The GUZZ S 3 is thick, but very comfortable to hold. The grip is padded by a black dot in the center of one side. It remains very well seated in the hand even when strumming with enthusiasm. The material used in the construction is soft and smooth.

The S 3 is the first guitar pick to actually have a significantly different sound when played on each of its three sides. There is one side that produces a dark tone when strumming chords. When the pick is turned to the other side, the sound brightens and shimmers from the strings. When playing single notes with the traditional point of the pick the volume of any instrument is decreased by approximately 25 %. It appears sound wise that the player has gone from using a traditional pick to using fingers. The usual bright sound of plastic contacting the strings disappears completely.

The GUZZ S 3 should definitely be considered by serious rhythm players. Many of my students play in Praise Bands and other acoustic settings. The ability to change and soften the volume and tone of their instrument by just flipping a pick would be a valuable asset. Playing single notes with the solo point may be ideal for many players. Utilizing the tone that is produced with it will be purely a matter of personal preference.

One thing is for sure, and that is that Jorge Guzman has refined and researched this pick thoroughly. The angles on the different sides do create the sounds that he says that they will. It will take a little getting used to in terms of thickness. The Guzz S 3 pick is a unique and truly fun product to consider adding to any guitarist’s musical toolbox.
