Overview: What Makes This Song Great

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Genre: Alternative Rock

Take four chords, a fuzz box and a boat load of attitude and you’re halfway to writing a great grunge-alternative rock song. Though they’ve become well-known for their politically tinged albums of late, California trio Green Day has long been a staple of the post-metal music scene, with 1995’s Dookie launching the band into international stardom. Featuring many of the band’s classic hits, the biggest single from the album was “When I Come Around,” a four-chord rocker that was originally written for lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s then ex-girlfriend, whom he would later go on to marry.

While the song is easy to pick up, only taking a few minutes for any beginner to intermediate guitarist to learn the chords, it’s a fun song to play along to. One of things that make any alternative or grunge song a hit is the focus on groove, simple chords, dirty tone and attitude. These may sound like simple things to do, but finding the right amount of fuzz, getting into the groove and strumming with the right emotion can take some time to work out. So dig in and check this tune out.
