Green Day Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Named as the Number 1 Single of the Decade in Rolling Stone’s reader’s poll, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” is still the most successful release, peaking at number 2 on the charts, by California punk band Green Day. Released on their “comeback” album, 2003 American Idiot, the song is a somber description of events revolving around the album’s main character, Jesus of Suburbia. Following in the footsteps of The Who’s Tommy, American Idiot was written in the Rock Opera style, which though an odd choice for a punk band, turned out to be a wise decision as the record has firmly stamped Green Day as one of the top rock acts of the new millennium.

Guitarists, and fans of Brit-Pop band Oasis, will no doubt recognize the chord progression from “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” as being the same as Oasis’ smash hit “Wonderwall.” Though bands can’t copyright chord progressions, as they can melodies and lyrics, this similarity has caused some tension between Green Day and Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher. The testy Brit commented, upon hearing the song, that they should have the decency to wait until he’s dead before they steal his songs. Ouch. But, coming from a guy who on several occasions has punched out his own brother over their music, this comment seems par for the course.

Regardless of the song’s origins, it’s a great progression, contains some gritty distorted guitar work and is fun to learn. Check it out, then check out Wonderwall and you be the judge as to how similar these monster hits really are.
