The opening, and title track, to Ozzy Osbourne’s 1983 album “Bark At the Moon” is a must learn for any serious rock guitarist. Featuring some killer lead and rhythm playing from Jake E. Lee, who manned the guitar helm for Ozzy between Randy Rhodes and Zakk Wylde, this track provides a fun challenge to any player looking to increase their rock-guitar chops.

As is the case, though not well known, with a lot of Ozzy’s songs from this period, the song was not written by the Prince of Darkness himself. Instead, guitarist Lee and bassist Bob Daisley teamed up to write the music and lyrics for the track.

This would lead to one of the stranger moments in rock history, when in 2003 Daisley and other former members of Ozzy’s early ‘80s bands sued the lead singer for back royalties. Though the case was thrown out of court, management decided to replace Daisley’s playing on these albums with new tracks, and subsequently rereleased those albums, including “Bark at the Moon,” with a new bass track and bassist. Ouch.

Those readers who enjoy playing Guitar Hero will recognize “Bark at the Moon” as the final track from the initial run of the game, which is often considered one of the most difficult tracks to complete. But take it from us, putting the time in to learn how to play Jake’s parts on a real guitar is a whole lot more rewarding, and easier to show off at parties, than on a video-game controller.
