Overview: What Makes This Song Great

Featuring his signature “chunk-a chunk-a” rhythm guitar work, a technique he borrowed from blues and country music, “That’ll be the Day” is one of the best know works by rock and roll legend Buddy Holly. Inspired by John Wayne’s catchphrase from the movie The Searchers, the song also showcases Holly’s lyrical lead playing, something that is often overshadowed by his rhythm guitar work and vocals.

Besides being a great song to learn on the guitar, it is also responsible for the launch of Buddy Holly’s back-up band “The Crickets.” Originally recorded for Decca in 1957, due to contract issues and poor initial sales, the label didn’t allow Holly to rerelease the song at a later date. Because of the contract, Holly decided to form “The Crickets,” rerecord the song, release it under their name and avoid any legal trouble with Decca. Doing so not only allowed him to get the record out in stores, but it was picked up on radios across the country and became a smash hit for Holly and his newly founded “Crickets.”

“That’ll be the Day” was also recorded by The Quarryman, a little known Skiffle group at the time that would later evolve into one of the biggest, if not the biggest, band’s in rock history, The Beatles.
